Personality: Michael can be described as... complex. People tend to believe they can read him like a book, as his attitude seems to be tell-tale. He is very competitive and slightly cocky, always willing to take on a challenge. His competition is generally playful, but he will get violent if drawn into that. He loves the feeling of victory over any other feeling that he's ever experienced, and works hard almost solely so he can get that feeling.
But if we look a little bit deeper, past that hard outer shell, we will discover a foolish boy with an inferiority complex. Michael truly fears that he cannot surpass others in any respect, and that he is not good enough to deserve to survive when others die. If you meet him, it is likely that he will feel that he has failed you in some way before you part ways, even if the meeting is only a few minutes long. While somewhat mentally crippling, this inferiority complex is what drives Michael to work so hard and be so competitive. Maybe if you get to know him, he'll let you know about these things.
In regards to other people, Michael is quite friendly. He likes to engage in friendly banter, sometimes making jokes that border on insulting, though they are never meant for the intention of hurting another unless such comments are made in battle. Speaking of battle, Michael's general attitude in a battle situation is that of a teenager on a roller coaster; excited. Battle is a chance for him to prove to himself and to others that he is worth something, so it is at this time that he works hardest.
History: There is nothing to special about Michael's existance. While his father was a caring parent, but was always away as a soldier for the Yevonites. His mother was very abusive. She would beat him for no reason sometimes, but the abuse was primarily verbal. This stunted his self-esteem, which was the direct cause of the development of his inferiority complex. Rather than becoming reclusive and hopeless, Michael did whatever he could to prove to his mother that he was worth something, but nothing was good enough for her.
Michael left home as soon as he could to get away from his cruel mother. He had spent his life thus far trying to prove to others that he was a person to be respected. Now he was out to prove it to himself. He took up swordsmanship to better himself as a warrior. Through hard work, intense training, and help from great swordsmen, he became quite good in a matter of years. However, it was still not good enough for him. He still felt worthless within. He didn't know what he was missing.
Michael considered joining one of the organizations that were sprouting up all over Spira after the calm started. However, he didn't feel that this would be sufficient. If he joined a group, there would be people within it who would always look down on him. Furthermore, no organization was safe from the hatred of one group of people or another. So Michael decided to hire himself out as a mercenary. Surely, if people were paying him for his services, then he would be respected as a great warrior. That is the story of how Michael became who he is today.
